DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY - AGRICULTURAL CAMPUS

The Dal AC Loggersports Team was formed in 1964 when an enthusiastic group of 7 NSAC Aggies (Wayne Morris, Dave Oulton, Doug Housley, John Rand, Adrian Touesnard, Brian Murray, and Don Gunn) were invited to compete in the Macdonald College Winter Carnival Woodsmen Competition.  This group of young men were the first to form the (then) NSAC Woodsmen. 

Over the years, the number of competitions grew starting with the addition of the UNB Competition and then the Sir Sandford Fleming College competition and finally the NSAC Competition.  The program expanded in 1979 with the addition of the first women's teams.  By 1996, the program expanded further to include two men's teams and two women's teams; a format that has persisted since.

With the expanded interested in the sport, the four primarily competing schools decided to form the Canadian Intercollgiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA) to improve the consistency of the competitions, establish standards and increase the profile of the sport among post-secondary students.  CILA became the national organizing body of intercollegiate loggersports with the support of major sponsors such as STIHL, Echo, and media networks such as ESPN and OLN.

Longstanding coach NSAC Rick Russell was a great driver of the sport since his competition days starting in 1977. He remained with the program as head coach from 1980 until his death in 2004. The NSAC Competition was renamed in his honour and in recognition of his many contributions to the sport and its league.
